From the Peach State to a Mile High: A Journey of Transition, Art, and Joy

Hello, my name is Indie!

I’m originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but have lived here in Denver, Colorado for the last 10 years. I moved here in December of 2016 with my mom, who is disabled. We moved to Denver because, with the Trump administration, she was unable to continue on Medicare, so we had to move somewhere more progressive and she chose Denver.

My performance life started when I was young. When I was four my mom put me into dance classes, and by the time I was five, I was already competing. I was professionally trained from then on until I turned seventeen.

I found drag here in Denver as an adult. I had, of course, heard of RuPaul, but had never witnessed drag in real life.

Once I started going out to the queer bars and getting into the club scene, I started to see Drag artists all over. I knew then that I simply loved the culture and talent that came with the art of drag. When I turned twenty-two, I got asked if I wanted to be apart of a drag show for the first time. I had no clue how to do makeup (and I still really don’t), but I knew I had the stage presence to be apart of that show.

So, I said yes!

That first show was the moment I fell in love with drag, and I have been performing drag, ‘boy’lesque, and male revue shows ever since.

Drag helped me find who I was as a person even more than it has helped me find who I am as an artist. After one year of performing, I started my transitioning journey and began HRT (hormone replacement therapy).

My biggest inspiration in drag is my drag brother Kaptain InHerPants. He truly took me under his wing, not only as an artist but as a fellow trans man. He taught me the ins and outs of performing in drag and even bought me my first packer! That is what true support and love in the community looks and feels like to me.

In this political climate, it is even harder to be a black, trans performance artist.

Not only are we being taken out in the streets, but we are overlooked when it comes to bookings.

I want people to clap extra loudly for the black, trans performance artists. Tip us even more. And book us!

We have come such a long way and have had to fight so hard in our day to day lives. So I want people who frequent drag shows to show extra love and support to us.

We need community support now more than ever!
